Compared to · The honest competitor list
When a competitor is the better choice for you.
Most agency websites have a "why us" page that lists what they do well. Ours says what other agencies do better — and in which situations you should go to them instead.
The five archetypes below cover the most common alternatives to working with us: a local generalist agency, a specialist single-channel agency, a large agency, an in-house team, or a freelancer / consultant. For each, we name three things they do better than we do AND three things we do better than them, plus a clear "pick them if" condition.
Alternative 1
A bespoke local digital agency
Locally-owned 3-7 person shop
Where they beat us.
- Walking into your office for the kick-off. Same town as you.
- Knowing the specific competitors in your patch by name.
- Networking through your local chamber / BNI / association.
Where we beat them.
- Showing the maths behind every recommendation. A 3-person shop doesn't have the depth to publish 29 measurement methodologies.
- Carrying the brand promise across every surface — monthly outcome card, named-auditor signoff, 30-day exit pack support.
- Mid-market scale economics. Below £1,500/mo a local shop is sometimes cheaper; above £2,500/mo they typically can't sustain the same delivery.
Pick them if: You value walk-in face time over depth of measurement AND your spend is genuinely below £1,000/mo. Sub-£500/mo is below our floor anyway.
Alternative 2
A specialist single-channel agency (SEO / PPC / Social)
Deep specialism in one channel, often 10-30 people
Where they beat us.
- Depth in their single channel. A pure-SEO shop knows technical SEO at a depth a generalist cannot match.
- Per-channel benchmarking against larger volume of comparable accounts.
- Networking inside their channel (e.g. SEO conferences, paid-media communities).
Where we beat them.
- Choosing across channels honestly. A pure-SEO shop will tell you SEO is the answer; a pure-paid shop will tell you ads are. We tell you what the maths shows.
- Cross-channel attribution that pencils out — the monthly outcome card forces every channel to defend its contribution.
- The integrated discipline — strategy + creative + analytics in one engagement with one weekly rhythm.
Pick them if: You have already decided which channel is your bottleneck AND you want the deepest specialist on that one channel. A single-channel agency wins when the diagnosis is already correct.
Alternative 3
A large generalist agency
100-1,000 people; multi-vertical; offices in several cities
Where they beat us.
- Capacity at scale. A 200-person agency can staff a 6-month campaign of 30 deliverables a week without thinking.
- Brand-name signalling. If your board wants 'we're working with a well-known agency' as a trust signal, this matters.
- Industries with deep institutional bench (FMCG, pharma, enterprise B2B).
Where we beat them.
- Margin honesty. Large agencies need to cover overheads that compound the bill; we publish our pricing and the formula behind it.
- Avoiding the bait-and-switch where the senior pitch team disappears after signing. Our pitch team is the delivery team — by design.
- Staying the right size for SMB / mid-market. Below £10k/mo a large agency typically can't justify their account-manager overhead.
Pick them if: You are spending £25k+/mo on marketing AND scale + brand-name signalling matter to your stakeholders. Above that band the math swings in their favour.
Alternative 4
An in-house team you'd otherwise hire
1-5 people on payroll, full-time
Where they beat us.
- Sitting next to you all day. Slack messages get answered in minutes.
- Knowing your business with the depth only daily exposure produces.
- Owning the long-term relationship with your tools, vendors, and platforms.
Where we beat them.
- Cost. Five in-house people are roughly £25k–£35k/mo all-in (salary + NI + tools + management); Ultra Studio is £10k/mo for equivalent capacity.
- Avoiding the recruiting risk. Hiring takes months; we start within a week.
- Bringing the network effect — what worked on one engagement informs the next, with strict tenant isolation. An in-house team can't see across companies.
Pick them if: You have £25k+/mo to spend AND you want the marketing function to live inside the business permanently AND you have the management bandwidth to lead the team. None of those is most owners; some of them is many owners.
Alternative 5
A freelancer or marketing consultant
Solo, 5-15 years' experience, often £50-£100/hour
Where they beat us.
- Cost at the low end. £500-£2,000/mo for a part-time freelancer is genuinely cheaper than us at the same band.
- Personal relationship — one person, one contract, no agency overhead.
- Specific skills (a copywriter, a designer, a paid-media operator) at depth.
Where we beat them.
- Continuity. A freelancer is one illness or one bigger client away from leaving you. Our continuity card carries the named team across periods.
- Cross-discipline integration. A single freelancer rarely does strategy + creative + analytics simultaneously — they pick a lane.
- Insurance, audit trail, and the kind of brand-promise discipline that a sole trader genuinely cannot underwrite.
Pick them if: Your budget is genuinely <£1,500/mo AND you need ONE specific deliverable type (copy, design, paid ops) AND you have the time to direct them yourself.
Why we publish this.
Two reasons. First, the prospects we want — the engagements where the marketing is the right intervention and we deliver what we said we'd deliver — survive this filter. The ones who leave for a local shop or an in-house team would have churned from us anyway.
Second, this page is the kind of trust signal that compounds. Only an agency confident in its differentiation can publish a list of competitors and where each one beats it. We can. So we do.
The list above describes archetypes, not specific firms. Specific competitor names appear in our internal sales-training materials but not here — naming a specific firm cuts both ways (some get unfair credit; some get unfair blame). The five archetypes cover the vast majority of alternatives most prospects consider.
